Artists Colin Herforth and Christie Jones met on Tenacatita Beach, while on separate vacations to Jalisco, Mexico. Colin fished for salmon and halibut out of Sitka, Alaska. Christie was an American student of art and language, living in the historic and graceful Mexican city of San Miguel de Allende in Guanajuato.
Well, one thing led to another… and Christie moved to Sitka, where she and Colin married. They started a retail and wholesale business producing silk-screened and hand-painted clothing that they named Fairweather Prints, after the rich fishing grounds north of Sitka. Colin soon left commercial fishing to work with Christie full-time.
In 2003, Colin and Christie started the vacation rentals, with their first and premier accommodation, the Fairweather Suite, while they remodeled their new Fairweather art and silkscreen studio. Two years later they developed Dreaming Bear Suites.
Colin and Christie now have three apartments that they have designed and furnished in the way that they would enjoy, if they were staying there themselves!
Colin is also a watercolor painter whose work can be seen at the Fairweather Gallery and Gifts on Lincoln Street. He can be heard playing on weekends with the band Slack Tide at various venues.
Colin and Christie love spending time with their amazing Belgian Tervuren Shepherd, Zorra, who travels with them as they explore warm and exotic places, hike the extensive trail system in Sitka, camp at Forest service cabins in the Tongass National Forest, and fish for their own table and freezer. They are eager to share their 35 plus years of local knowledge and the wonders of Sitka with all their guests.
